This superior example of a provincial Roxbury type case, with delicate fret and French feet, exhibits choice mahogany panels with vibrant cross banding. The case is attributed to Yarmouth cabinet maker Eliphalet Edson. [see "Harbor & Home, Furniture of Southeastern Massachusetts, 1710-1850" P. 24]. This case which features wonderfully figured mahogany and a mellow old surface, is in an agreeable small size. The arched pediment, paneled base and distinctive ogee feet are typical Newport characteristics. The handsomely painted dial, which features floral spandrels and a classical gilt urn in the lunette, is inscribed on the back "Walter Cornell". Cornell signed many of his clock dials in this ...
