Portsmouth, New Hampshire, circa 1780. A lolling chair having superlative form, with the best arms, arm supports and serpentine crest rail. Several related chairs with similar arm supports have surfaced; of these, two of closely related form have been sold by Sotheby's N.Y.C. in the last twenty years.
Current research attributes these lolling chairs to Robert Harrold of Portsmouth, NH (active 1765-1792); see Portsmouth Furniture Masterworks from the New Hampshire Sea Coast; ed. Brock Jobe; SPNEA; 1993; pages 325-327 for discussion of related chairs; and plate 14, page 414. This example is in superlative condition.
