Whimsical standing lion carousel figure with carved and jeweled ornament, by Charles I.D. Looff (1852-1918) of Brooklyn, New York. Circa 1895.

In old park painted surface. This lion exhibits the stylized, somewhat folky quality typical of Looff's personal carving in the late 19th century. Originally from the Carousel on the Pier in the Old Orchard Beach, Maine, which was dismantled and floated by barge to Peaks Island, Maine in the early 1900s. The carousel was then erected on the front of the island, adjacent to the Gem Dance Hall, where it operated into the late 1920s-early 1930s.
