Superb Federal Gouge-Carved and Polychrome Painted Fireplace Mantel

Washington, D.C. or Alexandria, VA area, 1st quarter of the 19th century.

Comprising an outwardly flaring mantel shelf with steps at center and ends above pilasters; above a white painted knife edge and carved dental moulding; above a full-width frieze, the center a raised and carved paterae with corner fans, flanked by four-pointed starts within diamonds bordered by stop-fluted fans, with raised vertical gouge-carved paterae on either end, all polychromed in marbilized paint reminiscent of book end-paper; above a white painted swag-carved moulding with a red and yellow painted border; the fireplace surround flanked by pairs of spiral-garlanded and swag-carved columns in polychrome marbilized paint, each side surmounted by a carved and painted book, one entitled 'The Life of Washington', the other 'Andrew Jackson'.
