When Columbus returned from his discovery of America a banquet was given him at Barcelona, Spain, at which the King and Queen were present. There was present an old sea captain who was jealous of Columbus and thought he was receiving too much praise for his discovery of America. "Any fool might have done it." He said "Waiter" cried Columbus, "bring me an egg". "My friend, balance it on end." The captain tried it but in vain. Columbus took it, cracked the shell on the end and left it standing on the table. "You can do it when shown how" said he. The King and Queen joined in the laugh.
