A Classical Sofa Table.
New York, Circa 1820.
Mahogany, Ebony, Brass line inlay (secondary woods: Cedrela, Poplar, Pine)
This sublime sofa table is one of the rare examples of its form. The rectilinear top has hinged leaves with canted corners which are held by double-fly supports. The conforming case, edged in ebony with brass line inlay, holds a drawer and a sham drawer on each side. The base is ornamented with brass-strung lyre supports centering a crotch veneered medial raised above hairy carved paw feet.
