Fernand Lungren (1859-1932); A Summer Evening Promenade in Central Park, 1888; 16 x 20 inches, Gouache on artist's board. Grisaille. The first artist to"discover" New York streets was Fernand Lungren. Years ago in the old Scribner's Magazine, which was later developed into The Century Magazine, readers were shown hitherto unsuspected picturesqueness and beauty in what to them had been humdrum New York. A young artist from the West had taught them to use their eyes in daily walks abroad and to see their heritage as they had never before realized it. -- William Macbeth
