Very fine William and Mary period chest with two short and two long drawers, veneered throughout in olivewood oyster pieces, the top drawer fronts outlined in boxwood, the top further decorated with quadrant circles forming a flower head. All the mouldings are also of olivewood and the chest stands on turned olivewood bun feet which, though replacements, are fitted through the original holes. This fact, and the design of the top moulding, demonstrates that this was never designed as a chest on stand. The locks are original and together with certain construction details, such as framed drawer bottoms and backboards, indicate perhaps a Dutch immigrant craftsman following William of Orange to England. The handles and escutcheons are certainly early if not original. In short, a good example of a classic period and design of early furniture of fine colour and condition.
