An Important Discovery!
A beautifully inlaid mahogany and bird's-eye maple sideboard by New Ipswich, New Hampshire, cabinetmaker, Oliver Batcheller. The piece is signed on the underside of the central cabinet section in graphite pencil.

To our knowledge this is the only known piece of this cabinetmaker's work to surface that is signed and dated. An undated game table by Batcheller is illustrated and briefly discussed in Plain & Elegant Rich & Common: Documented New Hampshire Furniture, 1750-1850, New Hampshire Historical Society, 1979, fig. 38, pages 96 and 97.
