Probably Bergamo, circa 1720-1740. Cassettone-a-ribalta-con-alzata. walnut and fruitwood, and silver gilt (argento meccato), with engraved mirror glass. Inlaid with trophies and mythological figures. Heigth 91 inches, 49.5 inches width, 25 inches depth.
This rococo slant-front secretary is in two parts, with a shaped rectangular top with an arched central cornice flanked by scrolls above two engraved glazed cupboard doors, the arched central panels engraved with a pair of classical draped figures standing on a foliate scrolled base, opening to a fitted interior enclosing pigeon holes and shelves; the lower section has a slant-front writing surface opening to reveal four short drawers and four pigeon holes all above one serpentine-fronted frieze drawer and three long conforming drawers flanked by silver-gilded scrolled pilasters, above a scrolled apron, all raised on ebonized short cabriole legs, ending in scrolled toes; the whole is decorated with classically draped figures within cartouches, bouquets of flowers within walnut reserves, all within fruitwood borders.
