This fan-back Windsor side chair made in New York City circa 1785, is one of only three known American Windsor chairs having Queen Anne pad feet. Fashioned from oak, poplar, and hickory, it has survived in fine original condition, and retains a mellow old finish. The pad feet are turned from the solid of the front legs, and are identical to those found on Classic New York yoke-back rush-seated chairs.
Overall height 32 inches.
PROVENANCE: Discovered in the first decades of the twentieth century by the pioneer Americana collector Luke Vincent Lockwood (1872-1951) of Greenwich, Connecticut, and remained in the Lockwood family until the late 1970s.
