| Extravagant and garish race horse game wheel, made by the H.C. Evans Co., sometime between its founding in 1892 and the 1920's, during the height of the mob-controlled Chicago gambling era. Its pictorial panels are lithograph behind glass, while the pierced red designs are sandwiched between crown-shaped mirror and glass, all of which is contained in a fanciful, sawtooth, white metal framework, adorned with 6-pointed stars. The turned wooden post and canister finial with alternating payoutdisplay are polychrome-painted red and black with cast-iron fittings and there is a dovetailed, cast-iron, snake- footed base. This beautiful decorative object, which breaks down nicely for transport, probably saw use in a betting bar or casino and survives in a simply remarkable state of preservation.
60" diameter, 88" tall, 22.5" deep
