Very fine sheraton carved and figured mahogany swell front chest, with undercut top and four book-matched crotch mahogany veneered drawers with beaded edge, flanked by extruded reeded legs having acanthus and waterleaf carved upper terminals, raised on turned legs ending in stump feet. Fine original color and condition. Attributed to William Hook or William Haskell, Salem, Massachusetts, circa 1810-15. 45" wide, 22 1/4" deep, 42 1/2" high.

The carving on this chest relates to a small but well-documented group of sheraton pieces made in Salem, Massachusetts in the 1810-15 time period. Most are linked to William Hook, but labeled examples by William Haskell are also known. The vertical waterleaf carving differs from the acanthus motif used in New York and elsewhere, and the shape and dimension of the turned leg is distinctively Salem.
