Nantucket Whaling Scene Hooked Rug
Nantucket Whaling Scene Hooked Rug Nantucket, Massachusetts, C. 1890 - 1900; Fabric hooked on burlap, 181/2 x 63 inches.

Depicting two whale ships flying American flags flanking a whimsical whaling encounter as manned whaleboats engage a whale. As one boat heads back to the mothership another launches their harpoon into the whale. A third whaleboat has been flung up into the air and has overturned causing the sailor to fall. The striated ground masterfully conveys the ocean's movement.

Reference: American Hooked and Sewn Rugs by Joel and Kate Kopp P. 66, Figure 89 for a rug executed by the same artist.

In the field of American folk art there exists special objects that stand above the rest in their category. In the classification of American hooked rugs the undisputed icon is this Nantucket whaling rug. Arguably the finest hooked rug in America.
