Northwest Iran, circa 1860-1870; 13'6" x 11'3" This Bakhshayesh is an important testimony to the transition from an archaic Northwest Persian culture into the more commercially oriented rug-weaving Renaissance of the 1860s and 1870s. The Zoroastrian symbols of the fire (the flame design in the spandrels) and the winged beings hark back to an ancient universe, while the size and palette of the carpet look to the decorative period that flourished in the third-quarter of the nineteenth century.
