In celbration of our thirtieth anniversary, we announce the volume, Calm in the Shadow of the Palmetto & Magnolia: Southern Art from the Charleston Renaissance Gallery, published in early December, 2003. Edited by Roberta Sokolitz, the catalogue of forty-two masterworks by leading American and European artists represents the finest quality and traditions of Southern culture from 1765 to the 1920s. The selection provides a vivid cultural tour of the South--touching on some of the people, history, and sights for which the region is legendary. Notable among them are:
Major General Thomas Hinds (c.1818-1819) by American portraitist, William Edward West.
Andrew Jackson (1836-1843), marble bust, by German Neoclassical sculptor Ferdinand Pettrich.
The Fugitive Slave (1853) by eminent Scottish painter John Adam Houston.
A Southern Ox Cart (1883) by American figurative painter, Elizabeth Boott Duveneck.
The Battle of Fort St. Philip (1902) by American landscape and marine artist Charles Dorman Robinson.
