An Unusual American Sailors' Woolwork Picture Of The RUTH.

The three-mast merchant ship sails from left to right. She sails on a calm sea made of thick green, yellow, blue and white threads, some of which have faded to a blue and white. The sky is composed of thick threads embroidered into a heavily patterned stylized sky that has faded to a soft cream color. She flies an American flag from her stern, a Jack flag (white stars on blue Canton) from her last mast, a red banner flag with "Ruth" written on it from her top mast and the French flag from her front mast.

Circa 1885.
