Lazare Gallery (open by appointment only) is located in historic Charles City County, directly beside the Berkclay Plantation on the James River (between Richmond Virginia and Williamsburg Virginia). Our 8200 square foot gallery houses approximately 1000 fine paintings from the Moscow School of Russian Realism. Included in the collection are paintings by a number of the greatest Soviet era master artists including Aleksandr Timofevich Danilichev (1921–1994), Gennady Georivitch Korolev (1913-1995), Valerii Borisovich Skuridin (1917–1983), Vyacheslav Nikolaevich Zabelin (1935-2002), Nikolai Sergeev (1908-1989), and Pavel Fedorovich Sudakov (1914 - Present).
Within the collection are paintings by many acclaimed Surikov educated living artists. Art scholars have stated that Russia produced the greatest school of art of the 20th century. The Surikov Institute in Moscow is one of the two greatest art academies in Russia, the other great school being the Repin Academy in St. Petersburg. Lazare Gallery primarily represents Surikov professors and Surikov graduates. After the end of the Soviet Union, most art schools switched their emphasis away from the great Russian traditional education to one more aligned with the more contemporary west. One of the studios within the Surikov Institute kept alive the traditional Soviet era methods of intense academic instruction until the death of the greatest Russian artist (and Surikov professor) of the last quarter of the 20th Century; Vyacheslav Nikolaevich Zabelin. Many of the living artists we represent studied with the ledgendary Zabelin.
The Lazare Gallery Collection is offered through a number of finer galleries including:
James Yarosh and Associates, Holmdel, NJ
Wallace Fine Art, Long Boat Key FL
Walls Gallery, Wilmington NC
In an attempt to make our out of town guests comfortable while viewing our sizable collection, we offer a private guest house located in a lovely forested setting overlooking a beaver pond which is on the gallery property. Guests may also arrive by boat and dock at the water front gallery. Art appreciators from many countries visit us. We can arrange for visitors to be picked up at the Richmond Virginia Airport.
The gallery is owned by Kathy and John Wurdeman. You are invited to visit us. Please contact us should you have any questions or desire to make an appointment to see the largest collection of fine paintings from the Moscow School of Russian Realism outside of Russia.
