Jervis McEntee was a painter of great intelligence, sensitivity, and complexity. His adaptability enabled him to endure when many of his Hudson River school colleagues fell out of fashion with the advent of French Impressionism. McEntee subtly incorporated looser brushwork and an impressionistic sensibility into his landscapes without ever abandoning Ruskinian ideals of objectivity and truth.

The great American art collector, Thomas B. Clarke, wrote about Eastern Sky at Sunset (ex-collection: Corcoran Gallery, Washington, D.C.), “The reflection of the sunset lends a darkling splendor to the clouded eastern sky…a gleam of light here and there suggests human habitations and relieves it of the gloom of complete abandonment.” From Catalogue of the Thomas B. Clarke Collection of American Pictures (Philadelphia: The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, 1891), p. 82.
