This leading dealer in nineteenth- and twentieth-century American paintings, American and European sculpture, and contemporary art celebrates its 150th anniversary this year. The exhibition and accompanying book by Betsy Fahlman, Professor of Art History at Arizona State University, offers both a chronicle of the gallery — which began as a modest antiques shop on Third Avenue — and a history of the origins and growth of the New York City art world. Works by two centuries of distinguished artists, including Albert Bierstadt, Thomas Hart Benton, and James Peale, first shown at the gallery and now in major museums, have been loaned for the exhibition.
