A Fine and Rare Cast Iron Dog
Robert Wood and Co., Philadelphia, circa 1870
Life Size, Iron
Courtesy Thurston Nichols American Antiques
Robert Wood and Company of Philadelphia was one of America's premier iron manufactories of the late nineteenth century specializing in decorative iron and bronze works. This rare life-size iron figure of a dog is cast in the form of a retriever. It is only one of a few known and is in the best condition, retaining an old surface. Its fluid movement, alert gaze, curly locks, and curled tail are extremely realistic and a tribute to the manufactory. This example was found in upstate New York.
