Three new buildings that more than double the High’s size are intended to create a vibrant “village for the arts” at the Woodruff Arts Center in midtown Atlanta. Designed by Italian architect Renzo Piano and open to the public in November, the expansion will allow the High to display more of its growing collection. The only museum in North America to have a curatorial department devoted to the field of folk and self-taught art, the High has extensive holdings of 19th- and 20th-century American and European art and a growing collection of African American art.
The new Anne Cox Chambers Wing will be the location for the upcoming Louvre-Atlantic project. Scheduled for launch in October 2006, this partnership between the Musée du Louvre in Paris and the High will bring hundreds of works by Raphael, Valasquez, Poussin, and others from the Louvre’s collections to Atlanta.
Andrew Wyeth: Memory and Magic (November 12, 2005–February 26, 2006) will be the High's inaugural exhibition in the new Wieland Pavilion Special Exhibition Gallery. Showcasing almost 100 tempera paintings, watercolors, and drawings, the exhibition highlights a significant body of work that has received little critical attention to date and features many pieces never publicly exhibited before.
