For the twelfth year in a row, collectors and enthusiasts enjoyed one of the art worlds gems, the Haughton International Art Fair in New York City, renowned for its strict vetting, its organization, and the quality of both its exhibitors and their offerings. Held at the Seventh Regiment Armory, Park Avenue, May 1318, 2005, it was an elegant show crowded with private buyers and institutions, eager to view and ready to buy. Many of the worlds leading dealers attended, exhibiting European and American works from the Renaissance to the 1960s. American art drew particular interest this year because of the concurrent major American art auctions in the city.
Dealers were especially pleased with the fair. Noted Reagan Upshaw, a director of Gerald Peters Gallery, We were very happy with the fair. We had a good crowd of people who are seriously collecting, and sold four works including a Modernist painting in the six-figure range. Other highlights included Daphne Alazrakis sale of Whitby from Station Quay, a small oil by 19th-century British artist John Atkinson Grimshaw, that also fetched a six-figure sum.
John Smiroldo, publisher of Antiques & Fine Art, noted, There was great energy. The new floor design was extremely successful, and sales were very strong. Added Alazraki, There is really not another fair like it in the United States.
Upcoming Haughton events in 2005 include The International Art & Design Fair (October 711), and The International Fine Art & Antique Dealers Show (October 2127), both in New York at the Seventh Regiment Armory. |
