Charles Frederick Veil was born in Germany in 1813. He immigrated to America where he became a tanner, living in Liberty (Tioga County), Pa. This fine folk watercolor picture of his home was “sketched from memory” by Veil after he moved to a nearby community. The precisely drawn gardens reflect Veil’s Continental background, yet the depiction of the people and animals is naïve, showing Veil’s lack of training as an artist. According to the local historian in Liberty, this fine home no longer exists. No other works by Charles Frederick Veil are known. |
