The size of this wall plaque indicates that it was probably commissioned for a large public building, possibly to hang above an entrance, either on its exterior or interior.

Two similar examples have surfaced at recent auctions, including a 38-inch carving at the Julie and Sandy Palley sale at Sotheby's in January 2002 (lot 926, sold for $170,000 plus premium.) At nearly a foot longer than the Palley piece, this carving is unusual for its great size.
