Elegance will never dull the robust art of Kanelba. I repeat his color is never affected. His palette is composed of solid tones that he doesnt mind putting down almost as roughly as in the post-Cezanne days of pure Color, wrote the French poet André Salmon in 1933. This École de Paris arist was known for his portraits, including such well known sitters as HRM Queen Elizabeth II, painted in a bold, colorful manner. His work is reexamined in the current Roughton Galleries exhibition Revisting a ModernistRaymond Kanelba, on view through March 27.
