This figure, possibly named “Maya,” was sculpted and cast during Wheeler Williams’s last year in Paris and is rumored to have been created for his own garden. He returned home to New York in 1928, presumably bringing the figure back with him as it was eventually acquired in the city. Williams was a member of the Architectural League of New York, the National Academy of Design, and the National Sculpture Society. His work ranged from monuments to fountains, with American commissions from New York to California.
