This attractive Federal chest of drawers was produced by the prolific Weymouth cabinetmaker Abiel White [1766-1844]. White employed a number of specific techniques and styles which readily identify his work, among these are his signature half spade foot. This chest, which has superior proportions, bold inlays and pronounced flared feet, is a superlative example of this important cabinetmakers work. This chest is illustrated and discussed in “Harbor & Home; Furniture of Southeastern Massachusetts” page 190, plate 65. The chest was also exhibited in the related exhibit at both Winterthur Museum, Delaware, Spring 2009 and then at The Nantucket Whaling Museum, Summer-Fall 2009. The swell front chest has a conforming overhanging top with a line inlaid and rosewood cross-banded edge. The top rests above a case of four graduated long drawers with cockbead surrounds. The drawer fronts have broad figured maple panels with line inlaid edges and mahogany cross-banded borders. The sides of the case are mahogany and the bottom edge is finished with a line inlaid border. The chest rests on spade form feet with long arched returns.
