Conrad Grasshoff (1848-1927) was born in Buffalo, New York and served in the Civil War with the 24th New York Cavalry Regiment. Shortly after the war, he married and moved to Altamont, Illinois, where he was employed by the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. Mr. Grasshoff began carving with the shin bones of cows in the 1870's as a hobby, and continued developing his creations for forty years.
