WILLIAM III / QUEEN ANNE WALNUT SIDE CHAIR, England, c1700-1710

An early high-backed form having Iberian influence, the top rail with the rectangular convex cresting, surmounting a cyma-curved vasiform splat pierced at the top, above an upholstered stuff-over seat raised on front “hipped” cabriole legs with squared knees and ending in pad feet, well formed serpentine stretchers connecting to the rear legs, which are joined by a further baluster turned stretcher.

Note: This particular form is somewhat rare. The stretcher and hipped cabriole legs with squared knees reflect Iberian influence. The vacant space between the seat and the back disappeared about 1710, with the cabriole leg coming into England only at 1700.

43 in. High x 21.75 in. Wide x 23.5 in. Deep
