This attractive clock case is among the finest produced in the Southeastern, Massachusetts region and houses the first movement produced by the rare Taunton clock maker Charles Babbitt [1786-1854]. The handsome clock case is in the manner of the high-style Hepplewhite cases produced in Boston during this period, which are referred to as “Roxbury” cases. The significance of this clock is compounded by the fact that such a high quality case houses the premiere clock movement by this extremely rare maker. The dial is signed with old English calligraphy at either side of the center arbor with the maker’s name “CHARLES - BABBITT” and below the winding arbors with his town and edition “TAUNTON - NO. 1”.
