This handsome bracket clock is signed with the name of this rare clockmaker John Crowley. The clock is in wonderful condition in a pleasing case with a mellow old surface. Crowley was active in Philadelphia producing bracket and shelf clocks from circa 1803-1823. Bracket clocks produced by American makers are extremely rare. The majority of 19th Century bracket clocks, sold in America, were produced in England for retailers who would market them in the U.S. with their names on the dial. This clock is a rare example that has both a movement and case that were produced entirely in America. American made bracket clocks are among the most prized clock forms by sophisticated collectors. The Chippendale mahogany case has superb old surface and houses a brass double fuse movement. The understated molded case has a tombstone-form with a paneled top with brass lift. The sides of the case have glazed rectangular windows. The glazed front door has a molded edge and a diamond form keyhole escutcheon. The rear glazed door has a cross banded edge. This rear door opens to a brass time and strike movement which has recently been serviced and is in good running condition. The back plate of the movement has no engraving. This is another clear indication that the clock was produced in American. A clock produced for the English market would never have an unembellished back plate. The front door opens to an painted iron dial. The dial has a strike / silent selector in the arch. The clock dial has ring of Roman numerals to demark the hour and an outer register with Arabic numerals to demark the minutes. The dial is fitted with open cut steel hands. The dial is signed below the center arbor in neat blocked calligraphy with the name and locale of the clockmaker “JOHN CROWLEY / PHILADa”.
