Antique Kerman, Persia, circa 1900 - A delicate Persian Herati pattern unfolds with miniscule precision across the deep chocolate ground of this sumptuous antique Kerman carpet. The design is so tightly worked, however, that the ground appears as little more than an outline defining and emboldening the detail of the design. The arabesque vinescroll main border is set against a pale salmon ground, providing a nice contrast to the field, whose outlined effect recurs on a smaller scale in the minor borders. The use of a consistent palette across the rug creates a sense of decorative unity despite the variations in design and scale.
