Frederick Buck. 1771-1839/40
Buck was born in Cork, the son of Jonathan Buck and brother of Adam Buck. He was probably a pupil of the Dublin Society Schools in 1783. He had a large following in Cork where he lived in 1787 at Fen's Quay, 1795 in Mardyke Street and in 1810 and, for some years after, in Buckingham Square. He is well known for his military portrait. During the Peninsular war, Cork was a busy port of embarkation and his services were in much demand to paint the departing officers.
His work is not considered as good as his brother but this particular miniature is a fine example of his work.
