Pair of "Rustic" Garden Benches.

This wonderful pair of benches exemplifies the romanticized naturalism popular in the second half on the 19th century in American landscape design. The arms, backs, and seats are comprised of oak branches with oak leaves and acorns. The legs are joined by intertwined snakes. Examples were made by a number of foundries. In 1857, Boston Ornamental Iron Works advertised a settee in this pattern for sale. The J.W. Fiske Company of New York advertised the design throughout the 1860's. As well, Samuel S. Bent of New York was still selling rustic cast iron seating in early 1890's. Probably American, 2nd half 19 century
