(1848-1927) Emily Harris McGary Selinger was born in Wilmington, North Carolina and attended schools in Providence. A writer and poet as well as an artist, she studied at the Cooper Institute in New York and with flower painters Amalia Rocchi in Florence, Italy and Margaret Roosenboom in Holland. In 1882 she married artist Jean Paul Selinger and the two embarked on a three-year tour of Europe, which was the inspiration for her series of letters published by the Boston Evening Transcript. Upon their return to Boston, the Selingers established a Boylston Street studio that became a gathering place for artists, musicians, and performers. The couple spent summers in New Hampshire's White Mountains from 1883 until Jean Paul Selinger's death in 1909. Selinger exhibited at the Boston Art Club from 1885 to 1905 and at the Massachusetts Charitable Mechanics Association in Boston. She died in Providence in 1927.
