Dana Bartlett was born in Ionia, Michigan on November 19, 1882. After studying at the Art Students League in New York City under William Merritt Chase and Charles Warren Eaton, Bartlett had a studio in Boston for a few years. He then moved to Portland, Oregon where he worked as a commercial artist for the Foster-Kleiser Company. About 1915, he briefly had a studio in San Francisco before making his final move to Los Angeles. He furthered his art training in Paris in 1924 and held a successful one-man show at the Los Angeles Museum of Art in 1927.
