Carl Robert Holty

Carl Robert Holty was born in 1900. He studied art at Parsons, the Art Institute of Chicago and the National Academy of Design in 1920 with Hans Hoffmann. Holty was a geometric abstractionist who traveled extensively from 1926-35. He was sponsored to join the Abstract-Creation group in Paris where he found greater artistic acceptance. Holty's biomorphic forms related to organic Surrealism similar to Miro. Large, soft edged color forms mix with or float on chromatic stains. Holty taught at the Art Students League and also helped establish the American Abstract Artists group. He died in 1973 after a long and prolific artistic career.
