Marie H. Guise Newcomb

Marie Newcomb was a late-19th century painter and illustrator who specialized in realistic portraits of horses and dogs. Born in New Jersey, Newcomb went to Paris to pursue an artistic career, training under Edouard Detaille, Albert Schenck, and Luigi Chialiva. She developed her expertise for depicting horses on travels through Algeria and the Sahara desert, where she studied the anatomy of Arabian horses. Upon her return to the U.S., Newcomb settled in New York and established a promising career as an animal painter. She exhibited at the Paris Salon, the National Academy of Design, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the 1893 Columbian Exhibition before her tragic death at age thirty.
