William Bruce

William Bruce was a talented nineteenth-century artist known for his landscapes, portraits, and animal paintings. Born in Auburn, New York, Bruce trained under Auburn's most famous landscape painter, George L. Clough, in the early 1880's and traveled to New York City and Europe for further study. He spent the rest of his life in Auburn, where he painted the rustic landscapes of the Hudson River Valley in a muted, tonal style. Bruce also gained recognition for his lifelike portraits and animal paintings, some of which grew so popular that they were reproduced in calendars and distributed throughout the world. His work is now featured in the Cayuga Museum of History and Art in Auburn, New York.
