Junius R. Sloan

Junius Sloan was an itinerant artist whose luminous paintings offer a vision of the early United States. Born in Ohio, Sloan lived in Pennsylvania, New York, the Hudson River Valley, Chicago, and California, creating serene landscapes in the style of the Hudson River School. He was a member of the Brooklyn Art Association and exhibited at the National Academy of Design, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Chicago Art Emporium. Today, the Brauer Museum of Art in Indiana houses the premier collection of his work, featuring over 400 of his paintings, watercolors, photographs, sketchbooks, letters, and documents. His paintings are also featured in the Chicago Historical Society, the Essex Historical Society, and the Minnesota Historical Society.
