Highlights: 175th Anniversary of Mount Auburn Cemetery
Bostonians founded Mount Auburn Cemetery in 1831 to solve the problem of the increasing number of burials in the city. Now a National Historic Landmark, a tour through Mount Auburns' rolling acres reveals some of the most distinguished names in American history. Art collector Isabella Stewart Gardner, poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and artist Winslow Homer are buried there. It is also a bird watcher's paradise and its seasonal blooms put on a constantly changing show. In partnership with the Boston Athenaeum, Harvard University's Museum of Natural History, and the New England Wildflower Society, among others, Mount Auburn is celebrating its 175th anniversary with a year of events. Included are free lectures on such themes as Asian influence on American horticulture, 19th century art and architecture, as well as art exhibitions and music programs featuring the works of artists and composers buried at Mount Auburn. A number of "legacy programs," including the installation of a Visitors Center, are also underway.
