"To have the finest work of Mondrian, Picasso, Kandinsky, among others, on display at the Museum of Fine Arts is a dream come true," says curator Tim Rodgers. The works, representing significant examples from all the major European modernist movements, such as cubism, futurism, De Stijl, surrealism, and abstraction, are from the Munson-Williams-Proctor Art Institute in Utica, New York, which began assembling its collection of early twentieth-century European art in the 1950s. "Seldom has New Mexico enjoyed the privilege to view these remarkable works in our home state. This opportunity may not happen again," says Rodgers, who adds that the exhibit will enable visitors to draw comparisons between the art produced in New Mexico and work by European artists. A companion exhibit of mostly works on paper, European Modern from the Museum of Fine Arts Permanent Collection, which opens shortly after Collecting Modern, will highlight European modernist work from the museum's collections.
