The Art of Stephen Huneck
By Laura Beach
Harry N. Abrams Inc , 224 pp, 215 color illus.,
hardcover, $50

The carvings and artwork of Stephen Huneck are clever, witty, and fun. Like the pop artists of the 1960s, Huneck manipulates elements of vernacular art and culture to comment on contemporary life. Best known for his sculptural dogs and cats, he also features angels, nuns, business men, bathing beauties, or any subject he feels will add a dimension of humor and personality to his creations. In the first book to survey Huneck’s accomplishments, author Laura Beach discusses how Huneck’s love of animals is the driving force behind his work. Also influential was his early career as an antiques dealer and furniture restorer. From his chests of drawers with carved “hand” pulls to a Windsor settee with Dachshund crest, many of his designs are inspired by traditional furniture—but are infused with Huneck’s wry, whimsical twist.
