Willard Metcalf (18581925) was one of Americas premier landscape painters. His impact on the Lyme art colony, Americas center of impressionism, has, up until now, never been extensively chronicled. This exhibition features more than forty plein-air paintings from the Griswold Museum, lending institutions, and private collections. Also featured are a diary, sketchbooks, and Metcalfs naturalist collection, which includes meticulously labeled bird eggs and nests, moths, and butterflies.
