In the booth of Nathan Liverant and Son at the 2002 Philadelphia Antiques Show, Metropolitan Museum of Art representatives noticed this important 1764 portrait. Young Girl Holding Flowers by Lawrence Kilbrunn is a testament to New York City’s emerging society in the middle of the eighteenth century. One of only a few signed works by Kilbrunn that includes James Beekman and Jane Beekman (New-York Historical Society) and Burach Judah (private collection), this portrait is in esteemed company. The fine attire worn by the sitter in Young Girl indicates that she was a daughter of a successful, though now unknown, New York family.
