A superb collection of vintage California paintings, assembled by San Franciscan Dr. C. Albert Shumate, are featured in the exhibition A Legacy of Early California Paintings: The Shumate Collection, on view at the Oakland Museum of California from May 26 to August 5. Shumate, a medical doctor by profession whose passion was history, was one of the earliest collectors of California art. The fifty-one paintings in the exhibition, representing more than forty prominent artists, provide a pictorial record of much of California’s history and artistic life between 1816 and 1916.

While the collection is on long-term loan to the museum by Shumate heirs, the exhibition provides the opportunity to view works that have “been seen by very few people,” according to curator Harvey Jones, including paintings by Albert Bierstadt, Thomas Hill, Percy Gray, Grace Carpenter Hudson, and Maynard Dixon.
