Very Fine William & Mary Chinoiserie-Decorated Black Japanned Cabinet on Chest

This cabinet on chest is extraordinary as it retains virtually all of its original polychrome and gilt decoration on both the exterior and interior surfaces. A number of late-seventeenth-century pieces of this form were made, but most have suffered from three centuries of use and overzealous restorers. We acquired this example from a private New England collector.
 The cabinet features cupboard doors decorated on the front with figures in an elaborate landscape of pavilions by a river. On the inside, a large drawer with a banner and birds set within another fantastic landscape is surmounted by seven drawers with gilt brass shaped back plates and handles; the lower section is fitted with a drop-front secretaire drawer with an assortment of cubbyholes and four small drawers, above three long graduated drawers on decorated, compressed bun feet.
